OAB Pavillion - Quality mention

The project proposal aims to test an innovative material, highlighting the technical / performance of polycarbonate panels and their aesthetic qualities. The project takes the form of a pavilion linear, three-dimensional representation of a guided touryet variable, rest area protected by the flow of traffic, communication tool and dissemination of information, artefacts and scalability due to the flexibility of the modular panels.

Concept
The concept is based on four key themes, which take at the same time significance of form and function. The structure is divided into three functional areas separately identified but able to return to the viewer a unified image of the building: the peripheral portions fitted with seats for the public; the terminal area of the pavilion used for exhibition; the central spine to allow the free passage and the crossing of the visitors.

  • Permeability
The stand 3 meters wide extends for a length of 24 meters, with a height varying between 3.1 and 3.8 meters. This conformation leads inevitably to the idea of a journey, and invites the viewer to follow the pavilion as a path. The visitor is faced with a variety of routes or possible breaks: can either drive through the tunnel to the area entirely dedicated to screening; can stop on one of the seats inside the pavilion; can simply look the interior of the stand or cross it thanks to the multiple access. The permeable space therefore allows the possibility of momentary stops without interfering with the creation of contemporary flows of visitors.
  • Comfort
The proposed form of the pavilion suggests the idea of a protected area, separated from the surrounding traffic flows of visitors and aims to offer the possibility of a break during the visit of the fair by being at the same time a landmark for the public. The alternation of colors and sinuous lines of the panels helps to create a picturesque setting. The seatings placed inside the pavilion invites to actually stop and allow time and space to observe the inside of the stand.
  • Communication
The pavilion meets the need to show the use of polycarbonate panels and to provide visibility to the participants in the competition; it has compositional valence and sample in scale of polycarbonate panels, used along the entire extent of the building; it can also be enriched with a number of key points that illustrate the characteristics of the material used and other communications.
  • Modularity
modularity has been achieved by developing a simple substructure consisting of nine portals made of steel (50x50x3mm), the polycarbonate panels are connected to the sctructure by simple plates and support guides. The substructure can easily be adapted, by increasing or decreasing the number of portals, according to need. The composition of side walls can be varied to meet the needs of adaptability of the project, using unconstrained composition of the six modules offered (50x390cm, 50x310cm, 50x280cm, 50x250cm, 50x220cm, 50x190cm). The shape proposedoutlines a symbolic interpretation of the skyline of Bergamo, evocative examples of the compositional flexibility of polycarbonate panels and their expressive possibilities.

Economic feasibility and technical notes
The use of polycarbonate and technological characteristics of the Rodeca panels (self-supporting on design span, joint system by preforming the profile of the panel) allows to limit the impact of the structure in a few simple steel frame, assembled on site by bolting. The lighting of the pavilion will be complemented by discreet lighting, freely positioned as needed along the entire development of the stand. The lights will simply be connected to steel bearing structure.

The project received the mention of the jury for the ideational commitment and high quality of work produced.
